Two political leaders from the BJP and SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India) have been murdered in Kerala's Alappuzha

Kerala police on Monday arrested two Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in connection with the assassination of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Secretary K S Shaan in Alappuzha on Saturday night.

Alappuzha (SP) Superintendent of Police G Jaidev said the arrested RSS staff - Prasad and Ranjith - hailed from the victim's Mannancheri area and were involved in the alleged plot.

The detainees had arranged for the attackers to attack the SDPI leader, the SP said. Eight others, including the killers, will be arrested, he added.

Also, police are yet to arrest the accused in connection with the murder of BJP OBC Morcha regional secretary Ranjith Sreenivas, who was killed Sunday morning in what appears to be revenge for Shaan's murder.

CCTV footage near Ranjith's home in the town of Alappuzha showed 12 people entering his trail with two six-wheel drive. Ranjith's attack was unexpected as he had never appeared on a list of political opponents, police said.

In protest of the Alappuzha massacre, Anil Kant, a district police chief, ordered the force to tighten its patrols across the country over the next three days. Vehicles were to be inspected and more police picnic would be confirmed in public places. The procession and the use of loudspeakers will be restricted for the next three days.

A group meeting called by district officials on Monday evening was postponed to Tuesday as the BJP decided to boycott the meeting. The BJP said the meeting was scheduled to take place in connection with the cremation of the slain leader. It is similar to his insult, the party said when it decided to boycott the meeting.
