South Africa has demanded the suspension of the auction of the keys to the jail cell of former president Nelson Mandelaon in Robben Island.
The auction is to be held in January in New York by a house at a Guernsey auction house. The traitor is Christo Brand, who was Mandela's bodyguard at the infamous prison.
SA's Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa said there had been no discussion with the government.
"The key of prison is for us. we South African," he said. "It is not a personal matter," the minister added.
Guernsey's says its auction is to raise funds for the construction of a memorial garden and museum near Mandela's burial ground. Auction is scheduled for January 28.
A prison cell lock is one of the few items on sale. Not only key other highlights also include in auction like Mandela's first painting of The Lighthouse, Robben Island and the exercise bike he was allowed to use as well as the prison tennis racquet.
Mandela, South Africa's former President, national hero, has spent 18 out of 27 years in prison on Robben Island. Later Mr Brand became a close friend of Mandela.
The infamous island, located in front of the city of Cape Town and Table Mountain, got its name from the sea level where he lived in abundance - robben which is a Dutch word meaning symbol.
Mandela was released in 1990 as South Africa began to move away from strong racism (apartheid) - a process that ended in the first multi-racial elections in 1994 when he was elected the country's first black president.
Mandela served one term and resigned in 1999.
Mandela took his last breath in 2013 at the age of 95.
