Santosh Halpati has applied for the election of Sarpanch in Chharwala village in Vapi district.
A candidate from the Vapi constituency in Gujarat received only one vote - his own - in the panchayat by-election of his constituency. According to Times Now, the candidate, Santosh Halpati, has replaced Sarpanch in Chharwala district in Vapi district. However, he was heartbroken when he found out that he had received one vote in addition to having 12 family members.
According to India Today, Mr Halpati broke down near the census center when he found out that none of his family members had voted for him. He said he expected at least his family, including his wife, to vote for him.
Mr Halpati said he was not saddened by his loss in the local election, but about the fact that none of his 12 family members voted for him. "Elections are coming and going," he was quoted as saying by Times Now. "I got one vote of mine which was obvious, even my family members had not cast vote for me" he added.
According to the PTI news agency, the State Electoral Commission on Tuesday night announced the results of 6,481 of the 8,686 panchayats in Gujarat. Elections were held two days ago.
Candidates in the panchayat election stand alone and not with party tickets, although they may be less than political parties if not. In a gram panchayat election, each person is required to cast two ballots, one for a sarpanch and one for a panchayat member for his or her ward.
