In the so-called "sign of change" by the new Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) newcomer, the party made a spectacular show in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election and won 14 of 35 wards while pushing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in second place. 

According to the Provincial Electoral Commission, Congress registered the victory in eight constituencies while Shiromani Akali Dal won only one ward.

Sitting BJP mayor Ravi K Sharma lost to AAP candidate.

Voting was held on December 24 and votes were counted on Monday. AAP national convener and Delhi prime minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that his party's victory in the Chandigarh by-elections was a sign of change in the Punjab where elections will be held early next year.

"This victory of the AAP in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is a sign of change in Punjab. The people of Chandigarh today have opted for AAP politics, rejecting corrupt politics. Congratulations to all the winners and staff of the AAP.

Speaking to the media, AAP leader Raghav Chadha said, "I thank the people of Chandigarh on behalf of the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal for providing such love and loyalty to such a small and faithful party, running for office here for the first time. Chandigarh is a trailer, Punjab is a film. "

Delhi's deputy prime minister, Manish Sisodia, said the people of Chandigarh also believed in Arvind Kejriwal's politics.

"The people of Chandigarh have come to believe in the politics of Arvind Kejriwal Ji today. For this, a heartfelt thanks to every single Chandigarh voter. This victory is a sign that people want to give a chance to 'honesty and active politics' if there is any other way," he said.
