A lawsuit filed in federal court in upstate New York alleges that Letitia James, a Democrat, violated Donald Trump's constitutional rights through a political investigation.

Former president Donald Trump sued New York attorney general Monday in an attempt to stop his annual investigation into his business, a court report said.

A lawsuit filed in federal court in upstate New York alleges that Letitia James, a Democrat, violated Trump's constitutional rights through a political investigation.

"His intentions are solely based on political hatred and the desire to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against any individual whom we consider to be a political rival," the statement said.

James is still investigating whether it is possible for the Trump Organization to illegally report false prices on its assets, which may have incurred banking and tax benefits.

In a statement released Monday, James described Trump's case as "an attempt to hold him accountable" in an investigation.

"There will be no interruption to our investigation because no one, not even someone named Trump, is above the law," he said.

Trump's lawsuit comes after the Washington Post reported earlier this month that he wanted James to testify in person in his office on January 7.

He launched the investigation in March 2019 and alleges that the Trump Organization was fraudulently extorting a certain amount of money when it demanded bank loans, and later reported very low rates when announcing assets in order to pay less taxes.

In October 2020, a senior vice president of the Trump Organization, Trump's son Eric was interviewed by James' office about the matter.

The former president faces the pressure of numerous legal investigations.

He was interrogated for more than four hours on October 18 as part of a crackdown on protesters who allegedly beat his bodyguards six years ago.

The Trump Organization is also under investigation by a Manhattan regional attorney for possible financial charges and insurance fraud.

In July, Alan Weiselberg, the Trump organization and longtime chief financial officer, pleaded not guilty to 15 counts of fraud and tax evasion in a New York court.

The trial is set to begin in mid-2022.

Meanwhile Trump is struggling to prevent his tax years from being released by prosecutors.
