Punjab Congress official Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former rival of the former finance minister, took to Twitter to announce the FIR against "major drug traffickers" on the basis of a February 2018 special report.
Punjab police have arrested former Shiromani Akali Dal minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a drug fraud on Monday night.
Despite the police crackdown, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu wrote on Twitter: “After 5.5 years of fighting the corrupt system run by Badal Family & Captain and 4 years delay without action by ED & STF reports against Majithia. At last, now, after pushing honest officials into positions of authority and influence, the first step has been taken! ”
Sidhu, 58, is the main political opponent of Majithia, 45, who is a three-time SAD MP for Majitha constituency in the Amritsar border. "Based on February 2018 STF FIR has been registered against a drug trafficking case at the Punjab police crime unit which I processed 4 years ago. It will be held until the main criminals of the drug group are given exemplary punishment; this is only the first step. It will fight until the punishment that is served as a barrier from generation to generation. We must choose honesty and justice and avoid drug traffickers and their protectors," he added.
Shiromani leader Akali Dal and former five-time cheif minister Parkash Singh Badal called the police action in anticipation, saying the ANC government had changed three DGPs to book his family members, including Majithia, the brother of his daughter-in-law and Bathinda SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
“I want to tell this (ANC) government to book me and take me wherever you want to go. I was booked 100 times and even my wife was not left behind. This is nothing but a political act, ”Badal said next to a political rally in Muktsar.
Attempts by the Congress government led by Charanjit Singh Channi to book Majithia in a drug case before the Punjab congressional election have met with mixed reactions. The Bureau of Investigation (BOI) chief AS Asthana allegedly wote letter which appeared on social media on Monday saying he was opposed to booking Majithia over a 2018 Special Task Force (STF) report lying on a closed cover. the Punjab and Haryana high courts. The four-page letter dated December 11 was addressed to the Director-General of Police (DGP) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota and entered social media from an unknown foreign number.
The Channan government has been under pressure from the country's congressman Sidhu to take action on a STF report on the involvement of certain political leaders and police officials in drug trafficking.
In his letter, Asthana said a review of the high court orders shows that certain statements were recorded by the Enforcement Directorate of Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) suspects, includes the name of Jagdish Bhola, Jagjit Singh Chahal and Maninder Singh Bittu Aulakh.
