Girish Thakorlal Nanavati, 86, former High Court judge who probed the 1984 Sikh riots and 2002 Godhra riots, passes away on Saturday.
Family members confirm the news of a former Supreme Court judge died of a heart attack in Gujarat at 1.15 pm on Saturday.
Born on February 17, 1935, Nanavati was registered as an advocate in the Bombay High Court.
After many year as lawyer, he was appointed as a judge of the Gujarat High Court with effect from July 19, 1979 and on December 14, 1993 was transferred to the Orissa High Court.
On January 31, 1994 Nanavati was being appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court .
He was replaced as the Chief Justice of Karnataka Supreme Court with effect from September 28, 1994. On March 6, 1995 Girish Nanavati was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court, and retired on February 16, 2000.
In 2014, Justices Nanavati and Akshay Mehta submitted their final report of the 2002 riots to Anandiben Patel, the then Prime Minister of Gujarat. More than 1,000 people were killed in this violence, mostly from the minority community.
The commission was appointed by the then Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2002 to investigate the riots that took place after two Sabarmati Express train coaches caught fire in which 59 "kar sevaks" were killed near the Godhra railway station.
The NDA government appointed Nanavati to investigate the 1984 Sikh riots. He was the only member of the Nanavati Commission.
