The U.S. congressman had been robbed of his car and belongings at gunpoint during a day-long car hijacking in the city of Philadelphia.

Mary Gay Scanlon's government phone and ID were among the items seized by the two criminals. The Democrat was not injured, his office said.

The FBI is assisting in the capture or killing of the attackers.

Like many American cities, Philadelphia has seen an increase in violent crime over the past year.

In a statement, City Mayor Jim Kenney, of the Democratic Alliance, called the robbery, which happened at 14:45 local time (19:45 GMT) on Wednesday, "bad".

The two men attacked after Ms Scanlon visited FDR Park south of Philadelphia, part of her congressional district, and was on her way back to the 2017 Acura MDX.

He was present at a work meeting, his office said.

A black SUV appeared, and two armed men inside demanded his keys and belongings.

"It's hard Philly I know you'll be fine!" wrote on Twitter his Democratic Philadelphia partner Brendan Boyle.

Philadelphia saw an 80% increase in car theft by 2021, according to CBS News. Gun theft has increased by 27% compared to 2020 in the area known as Brotherly Love City.

According to the Wall Street Journal, report says Philadelphia also saw a record 544 murders this year, up from 347 across 2019.

Ms Scanlon, who joined Congress in 2018, has joined a law reform program to send a mental health professional to 911 cases "instead of police".

The robbery in Philadelphia comes just 24 hours after another American lawyer was hijacked in a car with a gun pointed at a Chicago suburb.

Illinois state senator Kimberly Lightford, a Democrat, and her husband were robbed of their Mercedes SUV at gunpoint on Tuesday night, police said.
