Sudan's military govt restricts internet services in Khartoum

Sudan's military government has imposed ban on and cuts the internet services in the capital Khartoum as anti-coup protests continue.

Several bridges have also been closed and protesters have been warned of causing any disruption.

Last weekend, hundreds of thousands of protesters marched in Khartoum to demand the return of power after a military coup on October 25.

Protest organizers rely on web services and applications to organize large gatherings.

More than 100 people were injured in police clashes during last week's protests. Police are also accused of sexually abusing more than 10 women and girls.

Activists staged a series of street protests on Saturday, just two months after generals unveiled their ropes, before internet connections were disrupted.

One of the internet service provider told News channel named Reuters that the disruption followed a decision made by the Sudan National Telecommunications Corporation (NTC), which regulates the telecommunication department.

More security forces have been deployed throughout the capital, officials said, and local media reported that some bridges over the Nile River connected Khartoum to other closed cities.

Overthrow leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan defended the military takeover in October, saying the military had taken action to prevent a civil war because political parties were urging civilians to fight in the armed forces.

He said he was still committed to a change in civilian rule, as elections were scheduled for July 2023. However, it was unclear how strong the new government would be, as it would be controlled by the military.

The general also warned that the protests could disrupt the smooth transition to democracy.

Democracy activists have accused the military of plotting to overthrow the government that led to the ouster of long-serving King Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
