A Donald Trump supporter was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting police officers during an attack on the US Capitol, the heaviest penalty handed down in a January 6 violent investigation.
Robert Scott Palmer, 54, was seen in videos and photos wearing an American flag jacket adorned with pro-Trump pieces and a hat with the words “Florida for Trump” while throwing boards, a fire extinguisher and other items at police outside the Capitol.
He had tried to enter the Capitol but was turned away by a pepper spray ordered by security officials.
After that he continued to throw things at the police, until he was hit by a rubber bullet.
State judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed Palmer’s arguments for the release of the troubled child and a handwritten apology that he and others had been deceived into attacking the former ANC president, calling him a “dictator” and “wishing for power.” “
“I can see that we are saying that Trump’s supporters have been lied to,” he wrote.
Prosecutors have stated that even after pleading guilty on October 4, Palmer continued to defend his actions, calling the police a bully on his fundraising website.
“Palmer has deliberately joined a large number of riots in order to disrupt the national election process,” prosecutors told the court in a sentencing letter.
“Palmer’s violence was to achieve his political goal of undermining democratic elections and the peaceful transfer of power.”
The previous severe sentence for the Capitol attack was 41 months, handed down to two men who were charged with obstruction of justice but not charged with assaulting law enforcement.
More than 700 people have been charged in the attack, most of them minor offenses such as trespassing on the Capitol.
But twelve are facing charges of assault with deadly weapons and conspiracy, which could lead to harsh sentences.
